Singer Liam Payne’s cause of death has been officially confirmed as “polytrauma” during an inquest held in the UK.

The One Direction star passed away on October 16 after falling from a third-floor balcony at a hotel in Buenos Aires. Polytrauma refers to multiple traumatic injuries affecting various parts of the body and organ systems.

The inquest, which opened at Buckinghamshire Coroner’s Court on December 17, revealed that it may take considerable time to fully determine the circumstances surrounding Payne’s death. A pre-inquest review is scheduled for November 6, following the adjournment of the current proceedings.

Dr. Roberto Victor Cohen confirmed Payne’s medical cause of death as “polytrauma.” The hearing also noted that Payne was formally identified with assistance from funeral directors in Buckinghamshire.

During the proceedings, Senior Coroner Crispin Butler stated:
“Although investigations in Argentina regarding Liam’s death continue, I have no legal jurisdiction over them. Obtaining the necessary information, especially concerning the circumstances leading to Liam’s death, may take some time through formal channels involving the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.”
